Spa Themed Cookies

August 24, 2011

A few weeks before her birthday, Ella had a special day with her Mom.  She attended her first ever live theatre and enjoyed seeing an evening performance of The Lion King very much.  Earlier in the afternoon, Mom and daughter enjoyed their first ever manicure and pedicure together.

Perhaps it was that afternoon and an afternoon she spent here helping me make Easy Peasy Organics scrub and facial cleanser that Ella suddenly told her Mom that she didn’t want her birthday at the beach or splash park again this year, but instead wanted to have a Spa birthday at home.  So, her Mom went shopping and I started baking and before we knew it, the day of Ella’s party had arrived.  Ella’s house was decorated and ready for her guests.

As was Ella

and the cookies were finished too :)

The girls had a craft to do that they would take home with them. Painting and

decorating jewelry boxes while waiting their turn at the foot-soak and nail polishing station.

Or while waiting to complete their own organic facial scrubs made with honey and yogurt.

Then it was time to sooth the eyes and rest the body.

Before gathering round for the gift opening followed by finger sandwiches and other light refreshments.

Then of course, the best part of birthdays…wait for it…

Getting to share your favourite ice cream cake with your friends and your family.

Then before we knew it, time to say good-bye and gather round for one last photo  with friends who helped make the occasion of turning 8 so special for Ella.

Ella handed each of her guests a little basket that included children’s nail polish, a nail buffer, a new hair band, some spongy toe separators, children’s lip gloss, a purse size bottle of children’s hand cleanser,  and a thank-you cookie.  They also went home with some spa themed cookies in a little bag.  Ella was to have signed each of her Thank-You cookies with edible food writers but her forgetful Nanna (yours truly) neglected to bring them with her :(

Happy Birthday Bella Ella!  We love you to the moon and back

First things first OK? I am petitioning the courts to make you adopt me as your granddaughter…forget the age issue please? I implore you.

Second…back to the real world…I ALWAYS had my girls birthday parties at our home. We did something with a theme (and yes, once it was a spa too), I made them a cake to match and they had girlfriends over. Despite the initial pleas every year of having a party at some ‘place’ I always insisted that home is where it was going to be. And you know what? At the end of every party…I heard their friends say so many times, ‘this was the best party ever.’ I don’t have illusions that it was because I did anything so grand or elaborate; what I will always think it was is that they each got to feel special and connected to each other, not surrounded by mobs of other kids screaming and yelling!

Their memories of those moments in their minds today are special too and I’ve already been forewarned…when they have kids, I’m going to have to make the cake. Done…I can do that. And you have done that for your little sweetie too. Helping to make her a lifetime of great memories.
