Ella’s Cookie Art

July 18, 2012

Ever since she was able to hold a crayon, marker or paint brush in her hand, 8 year-old Ella has loved to draw.  I have an over-flowing scrapbook filled with the little treasures she has made me over the years that graced the front of my fridge before being tucked away between the covers of the spiral bound book.  I’m pretty confident that her parent’s could open an art supply store given all that they have purchased to keep Ella content with this hobby.  She never goes into the family car (or mine for that matter) without a notepad and sketchbook in hand and next to reading, drawing is one of her favourite past-times.

So why I never thought of doing this before now, given all the sugar cookies I have made is beyond me.  I had some extra cookies in the freezer and with Ella spending part of her summer vacation with us this week I decided to just frost them with white royal icing and let her go to town with the edible food colouring markers.

This post is compliments of my grand-daughter Ella and her cookie artwork below depicts just some of her favourite things.

She is a little obsessed with birds right now and I think she is hoping to get one for her birthday next month!

Ella still does not eat many of my sugar cookies.  Most times she will just take a taste and give the rest to her little sister Sophie who has no trouble making them disappear!  While she may not eat the cookies, Miss Ella has discovered that she does love to draw on them so I’ll have to remember to always have a few frosted with white royal icing waiting in the freezer for her visits.

Next time your kids or grand-kids want to draw and colour, why not give them a blank cookie palette and let their imaginations flow through the tips of your edible markers?

How affirming for Ella that you think her talent is good enough for your fabulous cookies!

Wow Ella! You artwork looks just as fabulous on a cookie as it does on paper…and very appetizing! Great job and so creative! And dad is right…you get that from me! Ha ha ha! Which I got from my mom (Nanna!) Beautiful cookies, Ella!

Ella must have inherited her Grandmother’s cookie talents! I never thought of this before, but it is a great idea!

Sooooo cute, Paula. I did this too with the children at my house when my youngest daughter turned 8. I made a lot of sugar cookies topped with blank icing and lay the food colour pens out. There were at least 6 children each with a cookie sharing the food colour pens.

I do admit to having a *little* panic attack though when I saw my step-neice (3) using a lot of black then immediately using bright yellow on top of the black after. I guess I need new food colour pens now. LOL.

What an adorable photo of Ella as a baby. This is a super fun summer project to do with the kids. Her art is really lovely. I think the collage of what she did would be a great framed photo memory. :) xx

Well done, Ella! What a great idea, Paula. I bet drawing on cookies would be a great group activity at a birthday party of kiddo gathering.
